Lower Phone Bills

It's getting harder to lower phone bills. In the past ten years the cost of communication has gone up; everyone has their own cell phone, and telephone companies constantly add new features to justify their high prices. Reducing your monthly phone expenses is easy, and has little to no effect on your current lifestyle.

Here's some tips for how you can prevent the phone companies from making your head ring:

Be a smart shopper. Ah, the Age of Information. Nowadays you can find a whole host of reviews and plan descriptions online at websites like www.myrateplan.com. Pick a plan that's right for you and you'll lower phone bills in no time!

Use Skype. Ditch your land line and replace it with this free Internet based phone service. You pay a monthly fee of $25 for unlimited domestic calls, or just use Skype to talk for free on international calls (provided the other party uses Skype as well). This is a fantastic service and we've saved hundreds of dollars using it while traveling around the world. Highly recommended.

Purchase a phone plan that is in touch with your needs. Everyone uses the phone differently. Do you make a lot of international calls? How about a lot of calls across the country, but not many local calls?  Make sure your plan allows you to call who you want, when you want without breaking the bank. Keep a close eye on plans that offer different rates for inter and intrastate calls if you have family in California and Kentucky.

Join the bandwagon. Look at the top three to five people you talk to the most. Which providers are they using? Most phone plans offer free calls among people who use their service. Rather than choose your own plan, see what others are using and calculate your potential savings if you signed up as well. Family plans are also a great way to lower phone bills.

Use free directory assistance. Need help finding your favorite restaurants number, but don't want to spend two dollars calling the operator? Try 1-800-FREE-411 or 1-800-GOOG-411 from your cellphone; they help you out for free. Admittedly, it's not as fast as the paid version, but at that price, who can argue?

Trim the fat. Do you use all the bells and whistles associated with your phone? Me neither, but you're probably paying for it.

Use these tips to slash your phone costs. Remember, this is one of the easiest places to trim your budget without changing your lifestyle; make the most of it!
